FRIESE Corrugating Rolls Expands
Fri, 15 Oct 2010
In the past months Friese invested over 1.5 mio Euro in new production capacity. The main acquisitions were a fourth Waldrich corrugator roll grinding machine and new building for a growing roll stock. This current phase brings the annual production capacity to over 400 roll sets. Future expansion is planned in replacement and upgrading of existing machines to enable a continued increase in other areas of production.

Friese uses only Waldrich grinders, they are the most precise available at the size required for corrugating roll manufacture. As such they require a foundation of the highest standard, 15M long by 2M deep. It made necessary the repositioning of other machines in the factory, and so Friese took the opportunity in the re-layout to improve logistics and material flow throughout the factory for overall improvement in efficiency and output.

The new grinder is designed for total flexibility. It can grind any profile to any requirement, a factor that is becoming increasingly relevant for customers developing their markets with newer, proprietary, Company and Group flute profiles. The unique quality output of the grinder combined with the best coating in the market assures the highest quality rolls from Friese in whatever special flute profile they choose to run.

Also OEM’s, from America, Europe and Asia, are aware of the higher precision in Friese rolls and purchase them not only for running mill operations but also for more critical projects. In addition, Friese interest extends to the use of Friese roll technology in new singlefacers and in new processes like cold corrugating.

Essential to the use of Friese rolls in these environments has been the breakthrough in surface quality of Friese Rockwelle coating to equal or better chrome surface finish. Installation at Friese of in-house tungsten spray coating equipment has allowed development of unique improvements in the Rockwelle coating structure that, along with the addition of special roll polishing processes, has led to substantial improvements in singlefacer production and a significant increase in corrugator roll life. Plants that achieved roll life of 60 to 80 mio lineal meters now look to run a 100 to 150 mio lineal meters.

The plant expansion and production improvements have increased further Friese competitiveness. The advantages from each of the corrugating roll advances have come without additional price to Friese customers in more than 60 countries around the world.
